Chinese Childhood Collage

" Wu Xing"五行 (usually translated as Five Phases)
Chinese five elements in daily life were regarded as the foundation of everything in the universe and natural phenomena. They have their own characters, and they can generate or destroy one other. My work explores the interactions between the five elements of nature-wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. The doctrine of five elements describes two cycles, a generating and creation cycle. I use matches, shells, and moss to explore the effect of the Inter-promoting cycle by abstracting the five elements and looking for the "primitive state" of nature and guide people to re-recognize the "authenticity" of the world.

Wood feeds Fire 12*12 inch, on canvas
I tie the matchsticks to the canvas with wire in a line and then light those matches and leave the trace of burning.

Metal creates Water 12*12 inch, on canvas
I broke down the shells and arranged them to a spiral and mix some gold foil into the epoxy on the top to create the effect of water.

Water nourishes Woods 12*12 inch, on canvas
I drew the wood grain by acrylic on the canvas to suggest wood, and I put moss on the canvas along with the wood grain.

Fire produces Earth 12*12 inch, on canvas
I tie the matchsticks to the canvas with wire in a line and then fully burned the matches to suggest the ash.
